They have both pupated... made their chrysalis. So now we are waiting!
The thing is this late they could decide to over winter in their chrysalis and not eclose until next spring!!!
I am trying to make sure the get sun during the day so maybe they will eclose now.

The brushfoot has now been confirmed as a Question Mark caterpillar. I can't locate the pic of that chrysalis right now. It pupated on the 22nd of August.

The one shown is the Black Swallowtail chrysalis. It pupated on the 28th of August.

Isn't it cool how they just change completely over to another bug!!

So what happens if they hatch over winter? What do you feed them? I always wanted to do this, but never have :)

You don't want them to eclose during the winter where I live. You can't feed them for an extended period, so they would die. If I do have to overwinter them I will have to keep them them where they will stay cold until spring.

It has been fascinating to watch. But after reading about monarch I don't think I want to try them! But it is fairly easy as long as you can feed the cats and clean their container everyday.

Anyway found the "?" chrysalis pic.

Why wouldn't you want to do a monarch? Are they harder or something? Sorry for the questions, but this has always amazed me :)

They do seem to be more sensitive & require more attention. They need to be kept a little moist so you have to mist them. And their appetites our HUGE. One need to make sure they have a plentiful and constant source of milkweed for them and feed them several times a day.

My BST only needed to be fed a couple of times a day. I found him on the wild Queen Annes Lace, so plenty of that aorund here. The "?" went into his "J" within 2 days of me finding him on an Elm, so he was no trouble at all!

They all eat different plants as cats, so you have to know what it is you found them on.
