Red Shouldered Hawk :)

This is what I found while walking under a tree on my birthday. He was about 5-10 feet away and while keeping an eye on us (and the dog in particular), he stretched his foot, rested his leg on the branch (at the joint) and then tucked his foot into his feathers. I took 45 photos, all on photobucket right now (even though I can't see them there, lol). This was WAY cool!

(Edit: I origionally thought he was a Cooper's, but I re-looked at my book and there's no way. :) He has to be a Red-shouldered)

Wow, really great pictures. Did get any shots of its tail feathers? That's a good ID feature. I had a Warbler mislabled on my bird pages and someone at the Newark Campus pointed out the problem and what to look for.

If you click on one of the photos it will take you to the album. I have all the shots I took uploaded. He never moved any more than his head and that one foot, which he eventually tucked into his feathers. He seemed small for a red tail, and being on a low branch in so much shade and leting us get so close fits the description of a red shouldered. There are a couple shots with his head to the side, this is when the dog moved behind my friend and he zoomed his head to look around her.

Around the next corner there was another hawk that I assume was the mate to this one, same size and coloring. I didn't see any red in the tail there, didn't get a shot off either, he was more skittish, spotted us before we spotted him.

I don't think it is a red tail. The face does not look right. Pretty hawk/falcon what ever it is. What great pictures!!

I have a Fuji 8000 point and shoot. It has 18x zoom. I think I should have splerged on a DSLR, but I had photos to take and it's done well enough for that. :)
