Black Squirrel!!!
I live in Central Il and this is the first black squirrel I have ever seen here. Glad I got the opportunity to take his pic. He was soooo cute!!!! He was in the neighbors Black Walnut Tree chowing down on walnuts.

Re: Black Squirrel!!!
I've only ever seen black squirrels in Canada. Their fur looks so silky!

Re: Black Squirrel!!!
Great pics, Muffy!
I normally don't take to squirrels too much, but that one looks down right cuddly! yeah right!
When we lived in Colorado, there were black squirrels in the mountains. They had really big ears, though...nobody knew why...probably so bears and mountain lions couldn't sneak up on them!
Thanks for the pics!

We have tons of black squirrels here. They were imported to Kent State University from Canada years ago and have increased their range considerably.

Hey Muffy, that's so cool! I've lived around here my whole life and have never seen a black one. (Saw one with a white tail once . . . ) Showed hubby your pictures, he can't believe it's around here, says you photo-shopped the picture!!!! I told him no way!! You and Annie are so good you don't have to do any photoshopping!!!
Great pic and can't wait to see my first black squirrel!

Re: Black Squirrel!!!
I laughed, Jane, when I read your post...
You probably won't have to wait long to see a black squirrel...if they multiply as fast as the brown ones do!

I was lucky to see him & get this picture. I took a bunch and only 3 pics came out decent. My daughter seen him again yesterday but he was too far away & into the branches of a tree. Hopefully he's here in the wintertime....he would show up nice again the snow!

Re: Black Squirrel!!!
Very cool. I've never seen one so I googled it and it looks like they happen naturally in the grey squirrel population. We have a population of greys with white ears, no odd white anywhere else, just the ears.

Re: Black Squirrel!!!
Metro Detroit Area has a black squirrel population - they cross from Canada on bridge guide wires. They seem to be agressive, chasing native red and gray squirrels away. There has been a noticeable drop in the population of the two latter.
Re: Black Squirrel!!!
Kas,
I didn't see your question about why they imported black squirrels to KSU.
I don't know why they did it. A groundskeeper imported several pairs from Ontario in the 1960s. I think it was done illegally. The black squirrels pretty much drove the other squirrels out and did not confine themselves to campus. Kent is the Tree City and is filled with beautiful, mature trees, a perfect habitat for the squirrels. When I arrived there to attend school in 1969, I had never seen a black squirrel and spent some time trying to get pictures to show my parents. In those days, it was hard to get a picture of anything that moved with a simple camera. I currently live 15 or so miles from campus and we have them in our back yard, so you can see, their range has increased. They are a bit larger than the grey squirrels and a bit more aggressive. And, boy, do they like sunflower seed!
