Remember That Strange Bird that Adopted Us

Post by kHT »

Well yesterday in a wild chain of events DH came home early from work from his city job,( yep he was laid off.) He found a bunch of craw fish and a huge
white spot of bird droppings. So we checked the tree and sure enough the bird was there in a different spot. It has move to the middle of the yard and not the back
where it normally is. We finally got a good shot of it, a black crowned night heron is what we think it is.

Oh, he's BEAUTIFUL! I didn't think it might be a heron until I saw the 3rd photo -- and that's a gorgeous shot you got! Is there only one of these birds hanging around?

I'm looking in the bird book and see that if it is a Black-crowned Night-Heron that it's a breeding adult. Their range is just outside where I live (central NY), but we have LOTS of Blue Herons here. I still remember the time one of the guys in my foursome thought the *very still* heron in the pond was a statue. The bird scared the crap out of him when he got too close. lol!

I'm glad you both got to see the pretty bird. Sorry about your DH losing his job. :(

The last one is a great blue, but you're right, the one in the tree is a black-crowned night heron adult. :)

Sorry about the job, that sucks.

We have several blue herons drop in on a weekly bases, our x-neighbor to the north had a pond with fish so this was their fast food stop.
A couple keep flying in to check out the pond but the black crowned night heron has a mate we can't get a shot of. The one in the photo is
the smaller of the two and it's sure a treat to watch them fly in at day break or fly out when it gets dark.
