Donna Mead - a great red

Post by toomanyanimals »

I got Donna Mead a couple of years ago, and I really don't care for the name, but I am always surprised at how much I like the flower. She has huge deep red flowers.
The hybridizer says 6.75 blooms. All 3 of mine today were over 6 in. and one was 7 in. Only 2 way branching, and about a 10 bud count on my plant.
She has great substance and color fast for a red.

Here is a picture I took today at 7 pm after a day of 90 degree heat and 90% humidity.

My camera likes to add pink to the photos. She is what the hybridizer calls a blood red. And she truly is a darker red than my picture.

I guess I need to learn how to fix the color on my dig cam pictures.

And JayDee: Each of these 3 blooms are crosses (I hope) with:

Here is a picture take by Reba J. Used with her permission. It is much closer to the true color.

Wow! Wish my red would show their true colors with the camera! Any idea how she got it to show so red? Very nice!

Love the color on her and the two SONG'S will certainly be capable of throwing great edges and widening the petals. LONG STOCKINGS will hopefully give up her muddy color and DONNA'S great color will come through.

I used LS on some narrow petaled flowers in '01 and got what I call my spider wannabe's. I have kept the ones that will set pods and bloomed a couple this year that are almost spiders, more on the unusual form side but at least it worked. I have various shades of pink and orange combinations, some with eyes. to continue trying to get the uf's that will be pod friendly.

It is so hard to find tet spiders that will set pods I consider breeding tet spiders to be like beating my head against a stone wall - I must like pain because I keep doing it.
