Daylily seedling

Post by Ed_B »

This one was huge, 7 inch plus, three year old,
This one may get bigger with age, and the color is a clear soft pink

Newbie alert!

By "poly" do you mean get 4 petals on the blooms?

Is that a trait you can cross for or a freak occurance?

Poly tepals and poly sepals are an occasional and happy occurrence. My daylilies usually poly the first few blooms of the season ...

polytepal

Post by Ed_B »

A freak of nature with this one. The only bloom to go polytepal was the maiden bloom, no succeeding bloom showed it. I could not get the plant to set pods either.

Too bad about the reluctant pod - maybe it was the hot dry weather and it will be better next year.

caliloo - There are polytepal flowers and the AHS recognizes them in flower shows and registrations. They must polytepal 50% of the time to be registered as such. There are several hybridizers working on them - do a google on happymoosegardens and you will see he has several polys. I think Petite intro'd one this year as a poly.

Very nice picture. I love them big!
Here is a picture of Longstocking polying. Only time it polyed for me.

Also, I have a seeding I don't think I posted earlier. I'm not enthralled with it , but hubby likes it.

I'm with your husband, nice seedling. I particularly like the width of the petals and sepals on it. Also like the bloom in back of it for the same reason. Is that a seedling or is it registered?

Do you have anything on property that has tet. LAVENDER BLUE BABY or BELLA SERA in it. If the seedling were mine, I would try to emphasize the blueness in that eye. Also, was this a first year seedling bloom?

Hi Jaydee,
It is a seedling behind JP x BM. It is either Buzz Saw x Victorian Lace (I think this is it) or possibly Mandalay bay music x Mandalay Bay Music.

Both are first year seedlings.

Sorry, no Lavenday blue baby or Bella Sera on property. But I do have some seedlings with one or the other as a parent that should bloom this year. I do have Steely Blue Eyes, but I like my seedling better.

I'm more into the reds and pinks and creams. The blue just seems so illusive to me. But I took a look at Lambersons website and I'm loving some of his 2005 intros.

I LOVE the VICTORIAN LACE cross but since VL is one of my favorite daylilies, I love all the kids. If and when I get some time I will post some of my VL kids.

I don't have either tet LBB or BS, but am bringing in a couple of kids out of them last fall and this spring. It definitely is not a goal of mine but I have a couple Hanson plants that show great bluish eyes so thought a little hard dormant crosses with those would be worth pursuing. When I looked at all my seedlings blooming the field was rather bland because creams and pinks are my two favorite colors. I definitely need to broaden my horizons.

When your seedlings bloom this year, something will pop up that needs to go to your cross.

Hi Ed,
I'm zone 6a, thanks to the lakes.
But we have property in Alpena and I would like to transfer some daylilies up there. So I'm paying close attention to what you say does well in your zone 4.
Thunder and Lightening you say?
I have that one, would be great to take to the lake.

Here are a couple of my VICTORIAN LACE seedlings. It is proven to be a wonderful parent and I have kept all of the seedlings from it in some of the crosses I did. This first one is SEMINOLE WIND x VICTORIAN LACE.

One more - SAN LUIS REGAL x VICTORIAN LACE - another first year bloom.

VL makes pretty regardless of who she is bred to - very dominant for ruffled, fancy daylilies.

Very nice jay dee! I especially like the first seedling.
I hope to have some more vic. lace seedlings bloom this year. Last year I was into the whites and creams.
My most ruffled to bloom was a cross - Pearl Cove x Green Mystique. The 2 blooms couldn't even open. I helped them and used their pollen. I hope they open better this year. Nope, no picture, all you could see was a bunch of closed ruffles.

What are the bloom sizes of your Vic. Lace seedlings?

Thunder & Lightning does very well for me. Very nice garden color.
What I like the most is almost all blooms open
perfectly with great color.
I have been crossing it with a little of everthing. I should see some results this year.
It can be touchy for pods, "for me at least" so do multiple same crosses to be sure you get the one you want.
