Striped leaf seedling

This is the first striped leaf daylily I have ever seen in person.

seedling ID, I-8
S-214 (Techny Peace x Caledonia) X So Beautiful To Me

I waited for the third leaf before I would let myself believe it

will post pics of parents and seedling

Hi Ed,

I've had a few that just showed up naturally, plus I've seen some variegated daylilies for sale from time to time, but each plant I've ever had either lost the variegation or ended up developing so much white that they died so I've never bothered trying any of the named variegated plants.

That's pretty cool that you had it occur with a seedling, though. Hopefully it will grow good for you, and better yet have a great flower to go with it

Very cool Ed.

I've heard of this before, but just like Chris said, they all said it didn't last. I've never had one, so just enjoy it while it lasts and if it does last, well, I think you just may make some money.

Hi Ed,
Congratulations, neat seedling but it may drive you crazy!

In 1994 I crossed Joan Senior x American Revolution (Joan senior came from tissue culture and had variegated leaves in early spring, lost the plant now). But several of the seedlings were variegated. How exciting, I was going to start a new line!
The seedlings grow slowly but bloom every year, several nice reds and great foliage in the spring. For ten years I have crossed every flower, backcrossed etc, never had any of the few seeds germinate. I had 20 variegated seedlings at one time, now just 5 left...... good luck!

I know a fellow named Sherm Flowers, who will be very interested in talking to you.
I copied your message, and sent him a private e-mail showing him your post.

I think his main daylily goal is with striped foliage, and he is very interested in reds & purples.
Even the limited success you are having is a giant step in the development of a striped foliage daylily
