This is my Stapilia hirsuta...

When I got it, I was told it takes very special conditions to bloom. Well, apparently my east living room window is "special conditions" for this plant! I have had it about 4 years and it bloomed 1 or 2 times the first two years, 3 or 4 last year and has already bloomed 5-6 times this year!

It is really cool except for one thing...the blooms smell like rotting flesh...eeewww!

I remember when my daughter and I first discovered these. We were wandering around a greenhouse of a small privately owned nursery. We saw these hanging baskets with these magnificent flowers. We both reached up to smell them at the same time, and....what a shock! We both quickly pulled away with our noses crinkled up and groaning. It was really funny! We remember it often. Hope you enjoy the pic...you can't smell them that way! :D

Beautiful! If a little kid colored a picture of a blank flower in those little stripes........we would laugh at his imagination!......p :D

Ah, the good old east facing lounge window, the best place in my house for orchids.

What a gorgeous bloom! I could forgive the scent for such a pretty flower.
