Japanese Maple from seed

Post by whis4ey »

This is a seedling from Suminagashi. This is three years old now. It is just opening for the year.
The plant is very like the parent, which is perhaps unusual for a seedling. I am very pleased with it :)

HEY DEBS....... have you had any success germinating your seeds?

Bludy hel Debs
I sent ye full destructions
After keeping them about 3-4 months in the bottom of the fridge I sowed mine in a seed tray on a heated bottom fingy :)
I had about a 30 % success rate
Give them time ... sing them a song ... keep them warm :)

Interesting, Sam!

You've given me an idea now! I have a lovely Japanese Maple that is FULL of seed right now....I have raised beds just under one side, but have never noticed any germinating.

I had not even thought about stratification, like you're talking about.....thanks!......p

Stratification should be in a slightly damp (not wet) peat based compost in the bottom of the fridge for 3-4 months. When the seeds are then sown out in spring (preferably on heated trays) they are more likely to germinate quickly. However, Japanese Maple seeds can take over a year to germinate, so PATIENCE is the name of the game :)
