How about THIS Pine for a Japanese garden?

Post by Herb »

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or under Specialty Plants.

However, seeing that in Japan things possessing venerability are often considered desirable, it seems to me that this species of Pine might deserve a place in Japanese gardens.

.It's a Wollemi Pine, a newly discovered (and very ancient) species of tree that's been found in Australia. It tempts me to try to seek out and grow one, despite the cost....

Hi Bert,
It looks more like a fern to me than a pine.

George,

A Google images search brings up quite a lot of pictures of it & some certainly look fern-like. Others remind me, a bit, of a Monkey Puzzle tree (but nicer). There's another web site about it here -

P.S. - calling me 'Bert' was amazingly accurate!
I grew up as 'Bert' & all my family & most of my friends back in England still call me that. 'Herb' was foisted on me later.

Hi BERT,
I called you that without thinking I should have put Herb but I think Bert suits you better so to me you are Bert.

I saw this tree featured on a tv series here in England about Kew Gardens. This is one of the rarest trees in the world, I'm sure it costs a fortune to buy. I'd be too scared in case I killed it!

Daren,

I'd certainly hesitate before buying one, but then I'm just a poor old pensioner. The first website I linked to (which I guess is in England) offers them - for 300 Pounds each.
