Any guess what this maple is?

This is the maple I bought last fall form the clearance rack at Lowe's. All the tag said was "Patio Maple".

I know it is a long shot to ID form just a couple of photos... but I figure it is a really common one since it was at Lowe's....

Any guesses appreciated!

Hi,
Seeing Sam has not posted yet, I would say it is an ACER PALMATUM ATROPURPEREUM DISECTUM.
George.

Thanks George I appreciate your posts.

Is the common name for this Crimson Queen?

That was my guess as well.
Don't know about the common name. I have a larger version over my tsukabi.

It is exceptionally difficult to name a Japanese maple from a single photograph
At a guess any maple sold cheaply at Lowes and described as a 'patio maple' is really just a seedling from a red dissectum
Acer Palmatum Atropupureum Dissectum means just exactly that ... a red dissected japanese maple
Acer Palmatum (Japanese maple)
Atropupureum (red/purple)
Dissectum (with a dissected leaf)
'Crimson Queen' is a named cultivar of the dissectum family .... your plant would certainly NOT be a named cultivar or it would have cost you more and would have been named at point of sale :) (scientific reasoning there :))
Enjoy what looks like a fine little tree. It has been correctly (in my opinion) named by George and Mike

Thanks Sam!

Even if it is of undetermined parantage, I still like it and it was well worth the $20 to bring it home (mho, of course).

You are absolutely right Alexa
If a tree is beautiful (which to my mind all Japanese maples are) then who cares about the name? :)

Hi,
After reading about caliloo's great find at Lowe's, I had to go and see what they had this week. I couldn’t resist buying a 30 inch Acer Palmatum Dissectum Atropurpureum ‘Garnet’. It’s very thin and flexible and it’s tide to a bamboo stake. It was a steal for only $29. :o It appears to be grafted to a different kind of rootstalk. Does anyone know what that rootstalk might be?
Thanks,
J

Way cool! Congrats on the great find!

I picked mine up last fall, I guess I should go back and check what they have now.

Can you post photos of your "Garnet"? I am very interested in seeing some of the readily available varieties.

The rootstalk would probably be a red or green palmatum. You would only be able to tell if it throws out a leaf from below the graft
Caliloo ... here is Garnet :)

caliloo-
I will try and take some pictures of it today.

Whis4ey-
That's very interesting about the graft. I will watch out for a leaf under the graft. Is that a photo of your Garnet? It's magnificent! What kind of palm tree is in the background?

Thanks,
J

The 'palm' is an Australian Cordyline
It is not really a Palm tree as such, although it certainly has the palm feel about it :)
This is a closer view of Garnet

What do you think of my new little baby (Acer Palmatum Dissectum Atropurpureum ‘Garnet’)? She is the yin to my yang. It’s just what I needed to balance out my big rock. You can see the graft in two of the photos. Not bad for only $29. :D

I think that will develop well
It has good height which will eventually help when it fills out
A good buy methinks :)

That is a gorgeous little tree - definitely a great buy!

I am going to repot mine today and I will look for a graft. Wish me luck!

Closer inspection on my maple..... yes, it IS grafted. When I got it last fall it was originally marked $80.... I got it for the awesome price of $20 because the GC manager sort of likes me (yea, he flirts with me a lot  ) so I think that is why he discounted it beyond the $40 it was marked down to.

Here is a closeup of the leaves on mine....

If it isn't Garnet, it sure is a close relative IMHO.
