My year to find seedlings.... updated June 10

I have never seen Japanese Maple seedlings anywhere in my garden, this year I have found 4 so far. I am so excited! I will probably leave them where they are until next year to get some size on them before I move them to a more permanent location. Are these first few leaves indicative of what it will look like as it matures? There seems to be a lot of variation between them.

I know it probably isn't exciting to you JM connoisseurs, but to a rookie like me it is VERY cool!

Really red, very round leaves

Dark burgandy, elongated leaves

green but I think it is still a JM, I don't have ANY maples that look like this....

red leaves, but the veins are green. hard to see in this photo, I will try more shots with better light

Thanks for looking!

Hey Sam

I'm pretty sure the red ones are all some sort of maples.... I just assumed the ones that were deeply lobed were from the JM in my neighbors yard (mine seems to be sterile in that I never see the little helicopters on it).

Maybe the green on is not a maple? It just seemed so similar to the other little red maple seedling I thought it just may have been a green one instead.

If they are maples, are these leaves indicative of what the mature leaves will look like or is it likely they will change in form as the plant matures?

Thanks for any help you can offer.....

Hi Caliloo,
Congratulation on your new babies! I’m no Acer expert but my first guess on the green one would be an Acer rubrum (Red Maple). I love them. They are a beautiful native maple, especially in the fall. What do the Acer masters think?

They could well all be maples, but I think only the last one is a Japanese maple
It will be interesting to see how they develop

Here is an upadated photo of the first one. It is in quite the growth spurt! The others are just languishing.

I think it is a pretty little thing....

It is a beauty indeed
Sorry I haven't enough experience of maples in general to guide you on its name

Hi,
The leaves look really leathery, we shall have to get our books out and try and identify it.

I'm not sure it can be identified. It really is just a chance seedling I found growing in one of my hosta beds. The only JM that sets seeds is one in my neighbors yard and I'm pretty sure that is not a named variety either.

Whatever the parentage, I still think it is awfully cute

And thanks for the nice comments :)
