Pictures of gardens in the grounds of Temples and in Parks can be instructive. I think though that pictures of home gardens in Japan can be more helpful when it comes to making our own gardens in limited spaces - yet I don't know of any books that concentrate on this, though the Journal of Japanese Gardening pays a fair amount of attention to it.
However, an Internet photo hosting site called Flickr does have quite a lot of pictures of gardens attached to Japanese homes. To find them you have use the site's search facility. Typing in such topics as "Japan private garden" or "Japan back yard" will lead you to some of them. They vary quite a lot. Somebody - presumably a tourist - had posted one picture of a yard that looked like an untended jungle. Many others though are very attractive indeed.
