The Nov/Dec 2007 issue of the Journal of Japanese Gardening (issue #60) has an interesting article about pruning. If you have just a small back garden I think it's well worth reading.
It's headed 'The Entoh-kei Shape'. It says it's nearly as important as the better known Tamamono (low mound) shape. Entoh-kei shape is more like a broad pillar with a domed top - sometimes taller than the average gardener.
The JOJG article includes several photographs & sketches that I think look very attractive. Shrubs pruned in this way can obviously make a very effective screen to enclose a small garden & give it extra privacy, so I should think they could very much suit an average small back yard garden, especially if the gardener has a view of his garden from one of the main living rooms inside his house. This integration of house & garden has become known as Sukiya Living.
I've used Photoshop to put together a picture of a small, imaginary back yard that includes Entoh-kei style shrubs, (hopefully more or less along the lines the JOJG have in mind).. Here it is.
