Not Again !

Post by Tokyo Mike »

Two years ago a late April hard freeze burned all the young leaves on my maples. Garden looked awful the rest of the year. Now we are in day two of this year's "freeze warnings". Lucky last night, only bottomed out a 34 degrees. Tonight should be the coldest.
Question...what is the minimum temperature where one could expect the trees to be okay ?

Hi Mike,
I don't know the answer to that but I should imagine that different varieties may succumb to the frost more than others.
I ALSO HOPE THAT YOU GET ANOTHER ANSWER BECAUSE EVERYONE SEEMS TO HAVE DESERTED THIS FORUM.
and there isn't much sense in carrying on with this forum seeing there is only you and me who want to post.
George.

Oh dear ... George is not in a very good mood today :)
George ... don't forget that THIS is the time of year when everybody is out in the garden trying to get things tidied up for the summer. At least that is where I am spending my own time :)
Mike ... this question has recently been asked in the maple forum attached to the University of British Columbia

All of mine got nipped by the freeze last week. Got down to 25F. :( The Bloodgood looks like it has the pox. As does the Crimson Queen. Waterfall looks like it fared the best, but they all look so sad-and we had such a great start to the season.

will they just come on or do I need to pull the others off? It would be a big job, but I can do it if necessary for summer beauty. The Bloodgood was planted just before my daughter was born and I hoped it would show off its glorious self for her 18 birthday in July.

Interestingly, only half of it was "burned". The other half is under a overhang with just a screen over it. The Crimson Queen is "burned" all around. A few others are "burned" here and there as well, but I can't spell them without looking them up. :???:

Thanks Whiskey for your up-lifting reply.

You don't need to pull off the frosted leaves unless you want to do this for asthetic reasons ... you are actually better NOT trying to, as you may damage the new buds ... and there are no others if the second lot fail :(

Glad to hear from everyone.
Update, the freeze never happened. 36-39 was the lowest readings. No frost.
The maples should be fine. Now for the rest of my garden !
