Spring babies

Post by Garden_of_Mu »

I planted some bearded iris seeds last year and was a little disappointed when only one sprouted. So I left them alone hoping they just needed more rain and cold thru another winter. Sure enough, there's little irises all over the pots. Maybe we'll see them bloom next year. They are just bee pods off some favorites though. I don't expect much, but it is a fun experiment.

Mike, I love this sort of stuff! It's like a science experiment. You'd think I'd get enough of science working in a lab, but I guess it is in our blood.

Be sure to keep pictures of how they grown and bloom ... I for one will be looking at them. :D

They certainly seem to be doing well for you this year.

I made the same experience - first year germination (bearded iris seed) was almost non-existent. So I gave the seeds a second winter period and now I have about 100 seedlings. I am very excited what will come out of this.

Hi Anja,
Nice to hear from our German friends. :D
And that is a great bit of information to anyone who is interested in trying to grow iris from seeds.

I cannot wait to see them bloom, but will have to be patient. However I do have about 40 siberian irises I grew from seed that should all bloom for me this spring. Can't wait to see what they look like. ;) I'll be sure to post pics of them when they open.

Hi tma, thank you for the nice welcome words.
I have some Siberian seeds that sprouted two years ago. The mother is the variety Steve Varner, the father is unknown. But I am not sure they will bloom in 2007. In my opinion Siberian babies grow much slower than bearded babies.
