Open garden day...
Well, there's only a handful left that haven't opened a bloom yet. The rest are in full glorious display. We're getting ready for an open garden today. I don't know what to expect, and really hope there's not that many visitors at once, as parking is very limited.
Here's a few new pics...

- I've not seen another like this one for color. Rich, velvety and smokey all at the same time.

A cold morning gave way to a windy but warm and sunny afternoon. The garden was fantastic and we had about 25 visitors. Everyone had a great visit and we really enjoyed showing off the property. A few had been at the previous open garden in 2004 at the old garden and were happy to see it again.
Best of all I learned alot about what we need to do to make the garden accessible to a wider range of folks. This can't be an effective display garden if one out of ten folks can't get thru the place. I can really appreciate how much we have done, but there is so much more to do before this will be where it needs to be.

Absolutely gorgeous! I love Maroon Damask.
I'm glad your open garden day turned out so well. As others already said, I wish I could have been there.

Beautiful shots Mike! Thanks so much for sharing. Sad to say, were all through with the bearded here in Tennessee. My last bloom closed yesterday. Adoregon, Keith Keppel.
Oh well, time to start working on next year!

Mike, I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on making a garden accessible. What have you done and what do you still need to do? Your irises are beautiful and I think it's great that you're creating a display garden that you can share with everyone.Best of all I learned alot about what we need to do to make the garden accessible to a wider range of folks. Thanks akita for asking the questions that came to mind. I sure hope Mike answers them as it's important in a walking garden to have it accessible to all that visit. Wheel chairs can be tricky? Mike, thanks for the update.

A few things I noticed (and keep in mind our grounds are still raw from the construction so most of this probably only applies to my garden right now).
- Stair steps should be level and no higher than 6-8 inches. Just because we can handle them doesn't mean everyone can. Handrails are a good idea.
- Wider is always better on main pathways. All pathways should be as level as possible.
- Fragrant flowers should be near the pathway. Visitors shouldn't have to step in a flowerbed to get to a fragrant bloom.
