Beautiful. What is the name of the black iris in the fifth picture? Is it iris chrysographes? This is a standout. I hope I can buy this iris somewhere in Germany.

Anja - Yes, it is I. chrysographes. This was grown from seed collected by Dan Hinkley who used to own Heronswood. They named it Kiwi Black, but never registered it. It is a knockout, but sure needs some lighter foliage behind it to make it stand out better in the border.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the pics! :)

I haven't been paying much attention to the iris forums, and look at what I've been missing! My loss, definitely.

All gorgeous, and I'd be delighted to grow any of 'em. I particularly like the ones in:
#36
#30 -- the one with the yellow and brown petals, in front (I forget what the parts are called  ), and
#30 -- the ones behind the first one, in various colors of what look like brown or garnet (the one on the far left in the second row of plants), small tan one in the middle of the row, and the one on the far right (with the darker bottom....ahem...petals or whatever you call 'em  ).

Do you have the names for those?

In photo 30:

1- yellow/brown is Bayberry Candle
2- orange-brown is Gingersnap
3- bronze bitone noid
4- red noid (Substitute Spartan)
5- The soft beige-brown is Jean Cayeux

There's a bright orange hiding next to the #3 down in the foliage - that's China Dragon.

I love this combo and built the whole bed aroun d these colors. That big blue in the back was not supposed to be there - had a different name on it. It'll come out this summer and will be replaced with a nice brown.

#36 is: Moonlit Sea, MN Mixed-up Kid, & Melanie. The 'M' bed and a chance combo that I really like.

Beautiful gardens. What are the tall purple flowers in Pictue 2. They are beautiful, as are all your pictures. Thank you. Deb

Just gorgeous, Mike! I've just purchased my first two Irises this last weekend when I was at Hallson's. I got "Before the Storm" (a black one) and "Immortality" (a white one) and have planted them side by side. Any special tips on growing Irises that I will need to know? Do you cut the foliage down in the late Fall? :???:
I hope Irises don't turn out to be another addiction.

Deb - Those tall spikey purple flowers are foxgloves. they grow wild here and I just leave them if they aren't bothering anything else about.

Joan - Be patient with both those varieties, they tend to settle in a few seasons before showing off. No need to remove foliage unless it is damaged, diseased or turning brown, and that can be done anytime you notice it. If it is green and looks reasonably good just leave it be to feed the plant. The only time I cut the foliage back is when dividing and replanting, so the fans aren't top-heavy.
