And it is really odd looking. It was just opening when I snapped the photo, but it doesn;t look normal to me (form-wise). Does it look familiar to anyone else?

That's a Japanese iris, and it looks just fine for that species - that is their usual form, flat, and they can have 3,6,9, or 12 petals depending on the variety. They are heavy drinkers and feeders, and must be moved every five years to fresh ground, unless they are planted where their soil is naturally flushed thru regularly. I have a few, but since they've always been in pots bloom is small and sparse.
