how many weeks before the iris blooms does the spathe appear ?

The spathes appear as the bloom stalk rises and they protect the buds from damage until they're ready to open. How long until you see bloom from the time you see spathes is going to depend on the variety and a dozen other factors. I can tell you that once you see the colored tip of the bud emerge from the spathes boom is less than a week days away, though cool weather can slow things.
