They are finally starting

Post by Garden_of_Mu »

Well our long cold spring has delayed the irises by weeks now, but they are finally getting started - and so are the slugs. Poor Sunstrip has had every blossom eaten and I doubt I'll even get to see it this year. Others are fairing better. They seem to ignore this little cutie. I'm told by the experts this is a variety of i. lutescens. Doris gave it to me years ago and I love it.

Hey Mike, that is like our Pauline which we got at Freddies.
We have several patches of this one as it's always the first to bloom here.

Our irises may be the same variety, but it can't be named Pauline. Not officially anyway. There were two Pauline's registered and both are listed as dark red bitone tall beardeds. Of the other nine varieties with Pauline in the name none are listed as dwarfs. It is pretty common for the irises being sold at the big box stores to be labeled whatever someone thinks will sell. I got down today and gave it a sniff and it has the most wonderful fragrance. It could not be cuter. :)

Thanks Mike, you know how we love those nurseries or big boxes for changing the names so they can sell the ones they can't!! These are the earliest of all our minis to bloom and we really love these. We have one bunch that this year shot up to the 16" height and are impressive when they all bloomed at one time! Thanks for the information and I'll let DS know the name problem.
