More pretty irises

Post by Garden_of_Mu »

Here's a few more photos of some varieties currently booming, including one of my PCI seedlings that has opened for the first time. It it almost the color of orange juice and is really eye catching. The form and habit could be better, but it is fun to see it anyway. :)

More to come soon. Nice warm day today and supposed to be hot tomorrow and Sunday before back to cool 60's temps. The blooms should get moving now.

A cute little variety with very old fashioned form, only has one bud per stalk though.

This one is so deep and richly colored. Not a great grower here though.

Those are really beautiful!

I am curious about the seedling.... it seems to be a non-bearded type, is that correct?

Also, if you plant seeds, how long does it take until you have blooming sized plants?

Thanks for posting them - they are all lovely!

The seedling is a Pacific Coast iris and it takes abut two years to see a bloom after growing from seed for most iris species. These were sprouted in 2006 and are now blooming for the first time (though one of their bunch did put out a single flower last year).

Mike, I can't grow PCIs here so I'm not too familiar with how they perform. Is the foliage in your seedling picture typical for PCIs? Just curious...

I'd say it is pretty typical. I haven't been in there with the clippers to remove the brown leaves from last fall that have died back now that new growth has filled it out. PCI foliage is usually held outward more so than other irises, and so are the bloom stalks. The best PCI's in my opinion are those with more upright foliage and stalks. I may use this one for the color and cross it with something with better foliage habit.

Here's another shot of it and a couple other pics too.

A sister seedling, smaller flowers and the only hint of red is in the light brown veins that are barely visible.

It does have the same texture as the Mohr family. You might not know it from the photo but Buddha Song is only about 7 inches high and that bloom is probably only 2 inches tall. It's very cute, but has a low bud count and only blooms for a few days.
