Companion ideas needed for 'Mulberry Rose'

Post by akita »

This is an older iris but I like the unusual color pattern. I dislike this iris combined with the yellow irises in the background. What other perennials can I combine with MB? My only thought would be some dark heuchera in the foreground, but heuchera don't get very tall. Ideas anyone?

My suggestions may not be to your taste.... I like planting schemes consisting of similar colors or similar tones. So when I saw your iris, nepeta popped into my head. Or, sage. At our new house, I have a flowering sage with a mid-range purple-blue flower and of course grey-green leaves. I think either of those would make a beautiful picture when planted with your iris. Alternatively, how about grapey-purple penstemons?

Looks like 'Mulberry Rose' to me! I'd like to see it with Peonies, if the bloom season overlaps.

As far as I know my iris is really 'Mulberry Rose'. If you visit the Schreiner Iris Tribute on the Brighton Park Iris web site my picture seems to match what they have listed.

http://www.brightonparkiris.com/mulberryrose.html

Brighton Park Iris also includes a 1954 catalog description of Mulberry Rose:

"An imposing Iris that is really different. A self of radiant, lovely mulberry rose - an unusual shade in the deep pink class. Its intrinsic value is its novel color that stands out from afar in the garden. Large sized blooms, self colored, tall stemmed and well branched."

They are both Mulberry Rose - it's just a difference in the camera and the light that is making them seem off. All traits besides color tone are identical, and MR is a very hard color to catch accurately.

Also hard to find a good companion for. Try it with something bold and blue-purple toned. Dark columbine maybe, or a dark purple siberian iris that will bloom around the same time.
