PCI's

Post by Garden_of_Mu »

Pacific Coast irises, that is. Hard to grow in other climates (they need dry summers and temperate winters to thrive) which is a shame as they are so tough and pretty. Here's a selection blooming here today.

Very pretty! I particularly like the 2nd one. It is a shame they wouldn't like it here - those would be lovely in my growing iris collection.

Thanks for the photos

Lovely pictures!

 Curiosity made me click on this post just to find out what PCI meant!  What I found out is that they are lovely irises that I won't be able to grow here in the midwest (has to do with that "temperate winters" requirement! :frosty:

Oh man that Broadleigh Rose is just yummy!

(I've about given up fighting the Iris Borers and other problems my irises have, but most still manage to survive despite the lack of care. Sorry about the unremoved dead head in the pic; I didn't see it til I loaded the pic on the computer.)

That's a cute little SDB. Here's a seedling (must be from BR above) that opened yesterday. I am in love with it! Also another pretty pass along with no name. I always think I'll get rid of it and then it goes and does something like this. It is not really peach but has that effect at a distance, so I've always called it peach & plum.

Here's two more PCI's - these are both versions of i. innominata, and also I'll post a PCI/Siberian cross (called calsibes) Cascade Velvet. KellieD gave me these three (as well as many of the others posted). :D

Not necessary Anja. They will grow great in any Mediterranean type climate (mild wet winters, dry summers), so you can choose from: The PNW of the US and Canada, the Mediterranean, South Africa, New Zealand, western Australia and the west coast of central Chile. :D

My Half Magic is blooming. I guess those are a cross with the pci, though. My iris seedlings I got from you at Andi's plant swap two years ago still haven't bloomed, so I can't tell you what color they are! But that might be because a columbine seedling was also in the pot and I didn't seperate them before I planted them. It is a beautiful dark purple double. Why did I think the pci only came in yellow?

The PCIs have just as wide if not wider of a color range than bearded iris do, but they are not as developed because of their lack of appeal to a very wide audience do to cultural issues. The crosses with sibs (calsibes) do much better.

Sorry to hear those sib seedlings haven't bloomed for you. I got maybe 2 or three good ones out of that huge batch. The rest were just so-so. Nothing special. Hope yours are pretty when they do open. They are heavy feeders so give them lots of compost or other amendments and lots of water until well established too. That should spur them to action.
