Louisianas!

Post by Garden_of_Mu »

Does anyone grow Louisiana irises? I've had some for years but they were always unhappily potted and are just this year giving me some blooms after I finally got them in the ground last year. They like alot of water and are heavy feeders. Since we have nothing but sand and rock here I buried a 3 foot wide plastic kiddie pool 2 feet below the ground and then filled the bed with very rich garden mix soil. When I water during our long dry summer whatever doesn't soak in will hold below until their roots can soak it up.

I have one that is very blue. I keep it in the pond with the Yellow flags. It is a good bloomer in the pond. I dug it up from a property that they were tearing down and building a new house on.

That's lovely, and the foliage looks great, unlike mine. Wish I had a full size pond to grow more of them in.

We have a few LAs. 'Black Gamecock' grows like a weed, even in partial shade. Got this and a white one from Chris a few years back, and the white one is almost swallowed up. 'Anne Chowning' is a true red worth looking for.
