Iris rhizomes

Post by ogrefcf »

So, my Mom had a bunch of Iris's and gave me some. The have been sitting out for a little while and the roots on the rhizomes have dried. Th leaves where still green, so I trimmed em back and soaked em in a little water. Are they going to be okay to plant or are they to dried out? I cut one of the rhizomes and they seem to be okay. Thanks,

And after some quick research it looks like you can do almost anything to them and they will grow so, never mind.

They should do just fine. Iris are very tough. I would mix a little super phosphate in with the soil to give the new roots that will form soon, a little boost. When the center leaf on the fan starts growing, you will know the roots are growing also.

A few years ago I sent my mom a bag of rhizomes and she misplaced them in the garage and didn't find them until a year later. She planted them and they all did just fine. They are so tough.

If there is one thing that this Old Coot named John knows it is, that you can't kill an Iris Rhizome. One year we dug some up and moved the bed. The next year we found some we had dropped some and just left them lying on the ground with nice roots coming out. WE picked them up, replanted them and they bloomed the folowing year.

I do always clip mine back in August and make sure the leaves are done away with properly. It is amazing how you can cut the Rhizomes up and replant the parts and double you flower beds (My mother taught me that). In fact I have found that if I do that every two years they seem to bloom better.

Looks like OC is going to have a good crop this year. Our fall was so wet and warm they are really putting out leaves.

It is the middle of January here in S>C> and it looks like Marrch already, from their growth. Come on Spring, OC is ready for it........ :D :D :D

Ogrefcf your garden and plants look great, only one problem,in 2 or 3 years they will be growing over each other and you will have a tough time trying to figure out which is which.

Yeah, I planted them thick because I didn't know if they would grow at the time. I'll just thin em in a few years if/when they do get to filled in. There's only two different kinds of plants in that bed, the iris's and a zebra grass, so they can go crazy if they want. I'm guessing the grass will hold it ground pretty well and if it gets to big I'll just trim it.

The good thing is when they bloom being so close together you will have a great display of color.

Here in iris borer country we have to coddle our irises. Mine are mulched with
crushed limestone, and a Zinger is left on at night-it works- to give
these new sets a fighting chance.

That looks like a nice place to sit and relax Plantaholic! looks like the iris are doing well.

Only part of mine bloomed. I got a lot of them in late so I wasn't expecting blooms. I did get a few pictures though.

The goal here is to have irises and the peony putting
on their show together.

I'm gradually learning which iris varieties to use.
For now it looks as though it'll be the yellow (Spirit of Memphis).
