question on dividing iris when the time comes. how much of the rhizome do you keep when planting? it seems I always have long and large sections that take up a lot of space in my small bed. can I cut them? I know I have to cut off the old portion. for a pleasing appearance, do you have all of the fans in the same direction or do you mix them up? do you put the rhizomes in the center and fans around it? this creates a bare center. sorry for these simple questions that the more experienced gardener already knows. birdy

Birdy, it really is a personal choice. If you bed or area is small trim the rhizome to fit your needs I plant to please my eye and not the same directions, mix it up!!
It's really a personal choice.
