carrots

i planted carrots in my garden for the first time. How do i know when they are ready to be picked and how do i pull them from the ground?

My DH keeps an idea in his head as to the amount of time that the seed packets say the plant will reach maturity after being planted. Then he grabs one by those leaves that sticks up...but very close to the ground..and kind of pulls and wiggles it around at the same time, til it comes out of the ground. You can judge by how that first carrot looks it the rest might be ready to be harvested.
