Does anyone grow garlic?

Post by janey »

Too many interests....not enough time!!!!

But one of Mom's Hospice volunteers dropped in last week and she was about to go visit her Dad who is an avid vegetable gardner. She mentioned that he grew fantastic garlic

I've checked a couple of web sites as to "how to" and it looks like fun. And, sounds like the soil here (great!) and sun exposure (full, full full on one side of the house)would work.

Homegrown garlic...YUM!

We grow social garlic to keep the moles at bay. I just stuck it in the ground and it grew. Try it!!

Karma~Another garlic post reminded me I had posed this question here....

What is "social" garlic? And does it really keep the moles away? Just starting to see tell-tale tunnels on the perimeter of the lawn....

One of our old time friends told us that is what they used on their property when he was younger. So gosh it's been at 15 years ago now that we planted it and all our neighbors have had problems but us. I love it!! I won't let it go to seed and thin it back every 5 years.

I grew garlic for the first time this year, and it was a wonderful success. I just stuck in in the back of everything against a little border fence. I enjoyed yummy garlic scapes thru early summer and wonderful garlic now in the fall, I have enough to last the winter, most likely. I planted it 6" deep last mid-October. It required no care and kept the critters and mosquitoes away. I will always grow garlic now.

I was thinking of trying this. How do you know when to harvest it?

Hi, I don't know about growing garlic or the timing of harvest in Florida, but mid-July works here in Wisconsin, assuming you planted it in the previous fall. Good luck, hope you can find something by googling on how to do it in your area!

Yes you are a charmer, Sam ;-) and my daughter is both beautiful AND wonderful. I am so proud of all her accomplishments, and glad to call her my friend as well.
