Stray cat seems to have found a home
Hi everyone,
After our bad luck with cats this year I really didn't want to get another one, but the rabbits have taken over and I can't even imagine how bad the mice and voles will be this winter so we have been talking about visiting the humane society to find a new one.
Yet it seems like that may not be needed. Over two weeks ago a cat showed up at our neighbors and has been living under his trailer. He fed it a little, but after a week and half it wouldn't leave and he couldn't take care of it. So we were asked if we wanted it.
Our other neighbor brought it over in a cage and at first glance she looked really sick. She was missing a lot of fur from her belly and back legs and was totally emaciated. She had fleas really bad, and worms, so we immediately gave her some Frontline Plus and a dewormer.
She has been declawed and also looks like she had been spayed, so at some time must have been a pet. We made a found cat report at the local vet and local pet rescue, but we haven't heard anything.
After a week now she is doing better, although she still doesn't know what to think of our other 2 cats. She is eating well, and putting on weight. The first 3 days she just slept, but now she is playing and is much more active. We are still keeping her away from the other cats and keeping their food separate just in case she is still sick. She will get a vet visit very soon to be checked out thoroughly, but our vet is away for a few days.
The strange thing is, she does NOT want to go outside. The other day one of the doors was left open and when I went back to the house she was just sitting in the open doorway looking out. She had no interest in leaving the house, so I really think she had been an indoor cat.
Anyway, sorry for the long rambling. Although I didn't want another black cat, here she is. We've named her Maddie.

I think Maddie knows who cares. She is so pretty and you both are saints to take her in like that. Inside or out she will get the hang of life there in the garden, just give her time. Hey what's wrong with black cats??

Awwwwwwww...sounds like your buddies had a paw in sending her to you! She's a beauty guys! I think after she's feeling like she's 'one of the family' she'll be more apt to wander outside. I wonder if she escaped from someone moving or was left behind, or came back to where she had lived after they moved and has been on her own a while.
She's looking great in that pic! LOVE THOSE EYES!

Aw she looks like such a sweetie!
I bet if she was declawed and spayed she was an indoor cat and now that she's had a taste of outdoor life she knows which is better! I bet she won't want to leave the house at all.
I'm glad she found you, and I know she will become a much loved member of the family.

It's breaks my heart to think of someone's past pet was either lost or throw out to fend for itself!! Just imagine how frightened she was! I'm so happy that destiny has brought her to you and Brian. I know you both will love her and care for her and that is just what she needs right now....a happy home. Bless you both! She is adorable! (((Chris and Brian)))
Awwwwww, I like that name Maddie!! I think she was an indoor cat, too....bet she just got out and got lost....wonder how old the vet will say she is? Maybe you should not let her out till you for sure that no one claims her....You don't want her to get lost again..(if that is what happened the first time) ....She looks good in your picture! Awwwww maybe you were meant to have her.....

Hi, Maddie! Welcome to Hallson's! I know you will like it here. Lots of friendly folks, and Chris and Brian take care of all of us!
(Chris, one more stray won't really be a big deal, will it? )
She's really cute! I think all of you (Chris, Brian and Maddie) got a good deal in this one!

Awww, she's such a cutie. I'm glad she found her way to you guys. Without claws she may not be able to defend herself well, so probably better if she stays indoors or close to the house.

That is true. If I could have kept Tiger in the house I would have a lot more $$ today I could never keep Tiger, or the late Missy, or the cat before that in the house! They loved the outdoors. For the first year Kanga stayed in the house. Now I can hardly keep her in the house, Tiger's bad infulence I am afraid.
Tiger is front declawed. Kanga however does have all her claws.
Chris, Maddy is beautiful. Keep her an inside Cat.

This long-time cat owner really hadn't planned to stick her nose in this one, Chris. But since I'm not exactly known for being tactful, in it goes.
Claudia and Tami are so 100% completely right about this. You can't let this guy outside! No way, no how, no time ever! It's declawed, and that means it is incapable of defending itself.
Fight with another cat? It is going to lose.
Attack by a dog, a raccoon, anything -- it could well lose its life. It goes out enough times, it probably will. I know that's a blunt statement, sorry about that.
The reason it's timid about going outside IMO is that it's always been an indoor cat. Keep it inside as your pet, and you'll never regret it!

Thanks for sharing. I know that there are plenty of chances for an outdoor cat to get killed. In many ways it comes with the territory, whether they have claws or not, but I too am sick about her not having front claws. However, the other day when our other cat Scratchie came over to her she raised up like a boxing kangaroo, and that made Scratchie think twice about getting any closer.
Maddie has already learned first hand what it is like to be out there alone, on her own, and she nearly died in the experience. I think she doesn't want to go outside again for that reason.
She has put on over half a pound of weight in the past week and is starting to grow some hair back on her belly and back legs, but that part still concerns me and our vet hasn't been available to check her yet. I'll ask him his opinion, too, about her going outside.

Maddie, Maddie, Maddie, what a lovely little kittie you are! And what a survivor. I'm partial to black cats for some reason (surprise!), but haven't had any tragic road mishaps, thank goodness.
It sounds like Maddie has found a good home. Her luck in finding you and Brian will hopefully carry her through the rest of her life without ever finding a car.
