Talk about shedding!!!!

Post by doublemom2 »

Pooka had her first full shed yesterday and today. She looked so hilarious yesterday, and kept scratching and rubbing up against rocks to peel this stuff off. Next time I get a sunburn (hopefully never!) and peel, I won't complain too much :o

 I remember a friend after our trip to florida our senior year! She got sun poisoning and did the same thing! Was just a gross  Some of the other friends actually peeled her at times, which made me ill at the time!

Poor little gal. Do you ever get the urge to help her peel it off?

Yep, looks like a bad sunburn peel. Wonder if it itches?

Oh, Andi! She is so cute! I can see why you didn't want to trade her in.

She's been scratching using her hind leg, just like a dog would. Keep in mind she's about 4-1/2" inches long, so it's pretty comical to watch  It's almost all gone today, she's much darker gray now with brighter yellow spots. Soooo purty!

How cute! It looks like her arm is out of its sling. Is she fully recovered?

How's 'Red'? Does he/she have an official name yet?

Her arm was fine for a week after we took the splint off, but now the ankle is starting to twist again. Looks like we'll have to splint it again, but I'd like to try it somehow without pinning her entire arm back. She's just so tiny it's almost impossible to tape just her little ankle.

"Chili" is doing good now, though we almost lost her last week from dehydration. For some reason she stopped eating for several days, and since they don't drink, no food=no water. I tried to return her to the breeder we got her from so he could take care of her, but he conveniently ignored me or made himself unavailable. We ended up doing an emergency vet visit for an injection of fluids, and that kickstarted her eating again, thank goodness. I would have been really bummed if we'd lost her. So... both of our new babies have had health issues, but they're worth it. Even my non-reptile DH likes them LOL!

Here they are together, Chili in the front and Pooka towards the back, on their basking rock:

O.k., I can sort of tell the difference between them in the pictures. But, Chili doesn't look red to me. Is it just the picture?

So is that a water 'bath' in the one pic? The blue plate/bowl? Do they bath in it at all? I didn't realize you could put them in a tank together? Are these both females then? Guess I don't understand' reptile norms :???:

Not a water bath, they're so tiny that I use a small Rubbermaid lid as their food bowl. These guys need very low humidity, no baths and no water.

As for keeping them together, there are about 20 species of Uromastyx and only two of those can be kept together without fighting. My Saharans (U. geryi) are one of those two. We know for sure Pooka is a girl, and we don't know what Chili is yet. Chili's spots will get brighter and brighter orange/red as s/he grows.

Here's a photo of a red-phase adult red...
Image

This is our adult yellow-phase male, Gizmo. He isn't nearly as bright yellow as some others I've seen, but he also hasn't completely shed since we've had him, so he might brighten up in the springtime:

There ya go... Your lizard trivia for the day LOL!

Acutally, Tori and I just finished building a new website (school project) about Uromastyx lizards and how to care for them. There is a lot of really bad information out there, especially from pet stores, so we wanted to get correct info available too. www.uroinfo.com

Love the name - Chili. I'm glad s/he is doing okay and that Pooka is doing well also. They are cute. Love those faces in that pic of them together.
