My Pets

Post by Rebekah »

Being on a farm, we've the leasure of owning plenty of land to share with animals.

Outside the house, I have 7 hens and have put my order in with my supplier for another 3 POL (point of lay) pullets.

An ever changing number of cattle. However, there is 10 milking dairy cattle at the moment, with other cattle dotted all over the farm for other purposes.
There is a handful of 'nurse cows' (cows used to mother on calves to) and the others are herd replacments for the dairy cows.

We've got 6 pigs at the moment. We rear weaner pigs up to a weight then 'flick' them off to the local 'works company' (slaughter house).

Inside the house we've got a selection of animals again.

There are 3 parrots.
1 Galah 'Pinky'

1 rainbow lorikeet 'Screechy boy'

1 yellow ringneck 'Buttercup'

I have 1 cat who gets on good with the birds, apart from Pinky. Pinky actually picks on the poor cat!

We used to have a good selection of tropical fish too, until a couple of years ago when we had a 'snow storm' and the power was out for a coupel of days.
We do get snow here at sea level.

I've got 1 Golden Retriever dog. Shes 18 months old now and a real show-off!

How cool! I don't have enough space for more than my parakeet.

what a nice variety of color in the birds and a silly golden. Very pretty and cute pets. Which I had time and money and space for a bird.

Rebekah, that is a wonderful family of animal companions. Your featherkids are colorful and beautiful, and the Golden is a real doll. What's the pups name?

jmboyer - she is called Bonnie.

I'm a real bird lover, as you can tell :D
The rainbow lorikeet cost NZ$390
Ringneck NZ$180
And the newest is Pinky at a staggering NZ$1590!

The lorikeet has a special diet of a mix that would be classed as 'baby food' in human terms. He doesn't eat seeds - doesn't know how to. He will chew food only for the juice it holds, whereas the other two will eat the whole thing (whatever that item of food be - carrot, meat, fruit etc). Pinky and Buttercup eat seeds, and thankfully they both eat the same sort of seed.

Will the lorikeet always eat like that? or is he still a baby and will change his habits as he matures?

LG - I believe that to be their natural eating habbit.

They sell a special lorikeet product in the pet shops.

He is, I think, around 5 years old now.

Buttercup is a couple of years old. She has only just developed their ring within the past 6 months. They will only develop rings at 2 years of age if they're male. But she has always been a girl to me :???:

Pinky is the baby of the lot. Shes 16 months old now.

Purfectly pretty, cept I didn't see that cat you speak of :)

So, I'll be the first to give I guess, what's with the pups coloration? IS that so he feels a part of the bird family? :)

lol OED - I know exactly what you mean :o

I have an old one of the cat here somewhere.... if I can find it! :???: :-?
Actually come to think of it I might actually have one of Pinky and Pussy on my bed one day. Cat wasn't happy about Pinky being there and quickly shot off shortly after I got the picture.

I'll have a look later and see what I can find, or I'll just take a new one of her for you guys :D
