Bailey is my 8 year old tri-colored beagle. She's a love, one of those dogs that everyone falls in luv with...
Tonight she was heading downstairs....we have 3 steps, a landing, a turn w/ 10 more, another w/ 2 and then you're in the downstairs hall. She started down, realized that my Mom who is 93, was just making her way oh-so-slowly down the main flight. Bailey started to go around her, stopped, backed up, sat, and without ever taking her eyes off of her, watched Mom make it down the stairs. Only when Mom was safely down did Bailey continue on her way...

Aww....there's a beagle in my Animal assisted therapy group. I thought he was a delinquent. Maybe he's super good with reading the people he services. Empathizing their mood when they're feeling poorly. Sweet. Dogs are so much smarter than we give'm credit for. Later, Love, Lisa

It's amazing how animals know what we need, isn't it? Every time that I've had surgery (three on the sinuses, one on the foot, and one on the knee) my cat hasn't left my side during the days of recovery following. She would layy right on top of me and would hardly let me get up to use the bathroom. I've been told that when I was sound asleep, she'd go eat, drink, use the litter box, and go right back to me.
Yep... they sure know, and some people don't give them the credit they deserve. Animals are just amazing.

Bailey's bulb is pretty bright when it come to people...she seems to be intuitive to needs and human emotions. If someone is upset in the family, she just hangs out and stays close to that person.
And she knows that she has to be quiet and gentle around my Mom.
However, her wattage definitely dims when it comes to litter box hors d'oeuvres and raiding the trash!!!!

Janey, that is a precious story. Bailey is truly a good dog. I agree with what has been said about animals being responsive to the needs and moods of humans. Non-critter folks refuse to believe that, but every person on this forum knows the sweetness of being "comforted" during illness or sadness by a beloved animal companion. Kudos to Bailey.

Am I asked for double trouble? Weekly I take my pooch of 4 years to work one day a week. NOW I have two poochs that will be "on the job" tomorrow. Lacy is a couch potatoe. She just wants to lay and sleep. I have a resident who adores Labs and lays in bed and reads between meals.
Do I have the bed partner for him!.
He will use his powerwheel chair to go outdoors after meals to smoke and return to horizontal. I'll coordinate meal time schedule so the pooch gets a break. I have an outdoor kennel for part of the day, while I'm at care conferences. Lacy got a new harness. Her I.D. tag states my cell phone # and Lisa's Lover. Those of you who have a pet name on their tag.....reconsider getting a new tag. The dog's name is the key to "control". This Lab lover couch potatoe that Lacy will hang with has to demonstrate his ability to control her. I'll be hanging a sign on the curtain stating dog @ large so if the laundry folks come it, she's not startled by a knock and not "alert" with a bark. He will then have to reassure Lacy that is "O.K." and recover from the interuption. I'll have to bring my camera for a kodak moment when they fall asleep. Later, Love, Lisa
