Pet Memorial Day established

Post by jmboyer »

Dear Friends,

I recently got a lovely message from Janet, who asked about the possibility of establishing a Pet Memorial Day for the beloved animal companions we have lost. In Janet's words, "We could gather to remember our departed friends, post pictures, tell stories, share laughs and special memories, and of course cry, all together. I know for me, the mourning has been private, and I'm guessing there are others that felt the same." Janet's concern was not only for all of us who have lost pets, but for those who have experienced the loss but have been unable to post about it.

I wrote back to Janet thanking her for her fine and worthy suggestion. When I shared her idea with Chris, he, too, thought it was a wonderful idea. He also did some additional research and discovered that a Pet Memorial Day has already been established by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries (IAPC). They have selected the second Sunday of September as a National Pet Memorial Day. Chris and I both think that we on this forum should do the same. In an unusual quirk, the second Sunday in September will fall this year on September 11, 2005.

So I am sharing this with all of you to say that we are adopting Janet's thoughtful idea on the second Sunday of every September. I urge everyone who has lost a beloved animal companion, especially those who have not been able to share this news in a separate post at the time the pet was lost, to post on the memorial thread. Photos and remembrances of your lost animal companion are encouraged and will be greatly welcomed.

We who come to this board are a special family of people who share a profound love and sensitivity toward animals. There is no better place to honor those precious companions we have lost.

To you, Janet, with your kind and loving heart, I extend a special thank-you for this exceptional idea.

What a wonderful idea. We , here on the forum, have lost so many of our beloved furkids, especially of late. Thank you Janet for the suggestion....and thank you to Janet Boyer and Chris for following through with it.

Awww, Janet (the both of you) you make me cry! It is indeed a thoughtful and kind suggestion. It will perhaps bring a little healing for those unable to talk about the loss of their beloved furkids.

What an incredibly sensitive and wonderful idea. I love it. There are many days lately when I find myself crying softly for the losses my DH and I have endured these recent months. I look forward to Pet Memorial Day at Hallson's. It will be a bittersweet day for us all and hopefully we will all heal a little more from it.

Thank you all for doing this for us.
