Koi

Post by outtahand »

I'm posting this here, because these are really pets of a sort,
and the pond gardening forum is more for plants.
I started my koi pond last summer, I kept a few goldfish
over the winter to get it balanced, and added Koi this summer.
I think the goldfish were a mistake. Now I have 50 2-3inch
goldfish I have to take out before their waste overloads
the system. I have 8 koi, about 8 - 10 inches. Here are
some of them, they're all butterfly koi.(long finned).
Also, one of my stray goldies.
They all come rushing up to the pond edge every time I walk
up, wanting food, the little piggies.
For some reason, this picture makes me think of autumn.
Maybe the fish remind me of yellow and orange leaves in the water.

Simply beautiful!! We are not allowed to have koi or goldfish outdoors here in Maine - I dont believe koi are allowed even inside. I understand the reasoning behind it, but I think they go too far.

Lovely pond! I have a friend who has koi and your right, when you walk to the side, they all come hoping to be fed.

WOW pretty fish! I have one like the orange gold colored one, but it's not a butterfly koi.
I think koi are pets, mine come to the top when they see me :)

I think Koi are pets...granted I never pet'm but they have very personality traits that separate them from the other fish. Recently, a bunch of Koi were stolen from a pond. The people who wanted the media to know about it (doubt that they'd try to pawn'm) with the message "no questions asked", just return'm. The family was very attatched to their fish. We threaten to "filet" them in the fall but we're kidding. We bring'm in every winter and release'm every spring. Later, Love, Lisa

Have I mentioned lately that my drinking team has a hosta problem?

Jim, that is an amazing picture. Yes, they are certainly right at home in the pet forum!
