Chicken

Post by Spider »

Look what I found when I came home the other day! I think it's a rooster, it was trying to crow, sounded pitifull! Bantom sized, anyone know what kind? It's legs are kind of funky, all lumpy and has some feathers halfway up one leg. Cute as anything. I guess I need to find a feed store and get some scratch, finch seed won't do for long.

It might be a bantam Brahma, possibly a mixed breed (a mutt chicken  ) since the coloring is more like an ISA brown. I wonder where he came from? If you start feeding him I bet he will hang around - probably wouldn't make very good eating if he is small ;)

I may call him Clint or Hank because the first thing I heard him say (and I'm so not kidding!) is "YeeeHaaawww". Now he sounds more like a real rooster with the more cock-a-doodle-doo. Someone needs to tell him I don't like country music! He's roosting on the axle of my front tires. So long as I don't go out after dark w/out thinking of him he should be OK. He sure won't move once he's there, I pet him last night, even held his beak between my fingers. All he did was dialate his pupils, lol! I was hopeing he was a hen, it'd be more quiet and I'd get an egg or two - no such luck. Mabe call him Axl (as in Axl Rose - more my style  )

It's funny, the Muscovies are scared of him - he rules the pile of corn! Hopefully I don't get in trouble from the neighbors or apt complex, but I am planning on plucking him out of my car Sat morning and taking a walk through the neighborhood. I heard roosters in the distance - calling back to him.

Some of you guys wanted chickens....

I got a fever, and it needs more cowbell!

I would keep him! I LOVE chickens :)
Only problem is when we had pet chickens, the roosters ALWAYS got mean! Them mean lil sapsuckers would attack us every time. It was ridiculous!! As big as we were we DID run from them. They can get some wicked spurs on them. Ask Muffy, she has the scars to prove it

Hens make great pets though :)

Examples of our pet chickens names were....
Sunshine
Rainbow
Lollypop
Floyd
Kit

Those were some of our roosters we had hehe. There were a lot more, but I'm old now and can't remember them right at the moment :)

Well.... Tuesday I came home and found him dead. I inspected him and there were no obvious sighns of trauma - no bleeding and I felt no broken bones. There were two small clumps of feathers nearby, so possibly death by duck. The ducks that were eating his corn were all ok, so he wasn't poisoned. I had mentioned his feet and legs looked funky, possibly he had bumblefoot or some sort of autoimmune disorder. He seemed fine when I left for work and his weight felt ok (feel along the breastbone). So, he's at the bottom of the dumpster. :( Poor chicken. I feel bad about him dieing, but he was free range and you have to expect something to happen eventually. He was fun to have around, but stressfull in the AM worrying about neighbors trying to sleep.

Sorry to hear it :( Free range chickens definitely are a lot more prone to predators, and since this little guy wasn't able to fly that probably didn't help. We have Silkies which are also a flightless chicken and we would hate to let them roam around too. But at least you got to enjoy him for a little while, and thanks for the pictures of him :)
