Hostanquilts made me do it!

Yep, after 20 years of saying I was going to make a quilt, I finally went and got a Mat, cutter and ruler. Then went to the library, got books, found pattern (quilt in a day), went back to store got fabric and made the top, AND ALL THIS WEEKEND!

Was suppose to be a Wall Hanging, but at 5 ft. sq. it is large enough for a throw blanket.

Quilt in a day, (as I always want to start BIG, but don't have the stay with it for BIG

) Quarter Log Cabin, in Reds, Blues, and Cream to Gold. Turned out nice and only a few flaws. Now I have to quilt it

Learning to quilt is one of those things I keep saying I'm going to learn "one of these days."
Way to go that you did it!!!

Tami, now you are really going to be out of cash! Between my plant habit and my fabric habit, I am always spending way too much! Now I am making two Double Wedding Ring quilts for my folks and DH's folks to selebrate their 46th (my parents) and 45th (Ray's) wedding anniversaries. I am using the same fabric in both, just a different layout of the rings. Both will be twin size to put on the sofas and I have already spent over $90 each just on fabric. Then there is the batting and backing to consider. I love it! I also need to make a quilt for my new baby who will be here in April! And I am not really supposed to be doing any of this until I finish my oldest son's Crazy Log Cabin I have been working on for a year. Hmm. I think I have a problem! Yes! I am addicted. It all started with a crib quilt to match the crib set and curtains I sewed for our baby girl three years ago. I haven't stopped since. I find the satisfaction of having the quilt actually quilted and bound is like a drug of some sort. I get really happy and have to keep looking at it and petting it! I miss the ones I have given away. Isn't that silly?

Kas? Do you finish them yourself, or have someone else do the finishing of them? If you send them out, what do they charge for custom quilting?

Cool! I've never taken a real class at a sewing center, but inspiration must have hit you and I at the same time 'cause I'm signed up for Quilt In A Day on February 15th!!!

I'm glad you posted. I was worried that there was now way we could get the top done in a day, but if you did it from scratch by yourself in a weekend, then in a class I should be able to get most of it done in a day.

Take a picture and show us!! (We won't even notice those teensy-weensy "flaws" you mentioned!!)

. I have to use the camcorder to take digi picts. and it is a pain. Will try to get to it this weekend.

Got a walking foot and tried to start quilting tonight, but the tension is wrong

and I now have to tear out 7 rows of stitching

. I should never do things while sleepy. The navy back thread is 'showing' on the front where I am using clear thread.

Kas, I feel the same way about my Cross Stitching stuff as you do your quilts! In fact I have quit making stuff for others as I didn't have much for my self after a dozen years of stitching.

Oh Tami, so sorry to hear you have to tear out 7 rows of stitching. I really hate it when the tension gets messed up. I've learned to do a test piece by making a fairly large sandwich of the material & batting that I'm going to be quilting & practice on it a bit to get the tension right. Sorry that I didn't think about telling you that during our meeting. Hope the rest goes well for you. Am looking forward to the picture.

Jan, I did test, but on the wrong color fabric

. I just grabbed some of the extra back and batting that I was cutting off when I 'sandwiched the layers'. The navy threat only showed up on the lightest colors, that is why it took me so long to notice it. Luckly it didn't take but a couple of hours to tear out and I will start again tonight with the quilting, after practicing on LIGHT fabric

I just happened to work with a nurse last night (that I only see in a blue moon) who is a quilter. She got some ribbons at the st. fair last summer

. She said she used varigated quilting threads a lot now to quilt with, they blend in really well. Mine is too bold for that, but will remember for in the future.

Jane, I do the quilting myself. I am not sure what they charge if you send it out, but I am sure it varies. So far I have only done machine quilting, but I would love to hand quilt. It looks so pretty! I have done hand piecing. That is a nice way to keep sewing even while away from home and my machine. It has been especially handy while being pregnant. You spend so much time in the waiting room at least once a month and soon to be twice a month for me. The part about doing the quilting myself that I really don't like is the marking of the top. What a pain. But it has to be done, I guess.

Well, I machine quilted the top this weekend, only the binding left. I will need lots of practice

, esp. with the darning foot. Oh, well, it was for practice and to learn from. And I won't feel quilty for using it and letting the kids use it around the house now

.

I just am not the kind of person who reads all the directions and does all the practice assignments and makes the little cute, easy stuff to learn anything. I want to make SOMETHING, and be an expert by the second week!

And I want to plow thru it in a hurry. As I go, I am willing to learn from my mistakes, go back and actually read the instructions and slow down and do things 'correctly'. Actually I am beginning to think that Hand Quilting might be easier.

I'm sure it will be fine. We are always critical of ourselves worse than anyone else. Just remember to not point out the mistakes and I'll never notice them!
