Does anyone have any good resources for ideas on how to paint a table? I have an old pine table in my kitchen and I would like to paint in very whimsically. Kinda Florida-beachy with bright colors. Could be stencils although I don't thinkI really want a pattern to it, maybe geometric. I am not very artistic but I have seen tables and chairs down in Florida painted in this manner and they are so fun!!!!!!!!! TIA- Susan

I've never done anything like this but I'd love to see what you eventually come up with. One thought that did come to my mind was stamping designs on a painted table. I used to do a lot of potato stamping and you can actually cut some incredibly detailed designs into a potato or you can find gorgeous rubber stamps at craft and home improvement stores.

I did a combination of some freehand painting with a lot of stamping, usually leaves and flowers made from real plants. The look is pretty convincing!

I wish I had an old table to try to do this myself - it sounds like a really cute idea.

First figure out what you want to do. Most Hobby stores etc have stencils you can buy, or you can go online and download them, or find a picture, fabric etc that has what you want to reproduce and create your own stencil.
Then as far as painting, be sure to clean the table really well, and a light sanding to prep it for the paint.
If you are going to use the table outside, use a latex paint, if inside, use an oil base paint.

I am going to get my DH (who is a house painter thank goodness) paint my kitchen table and chairs in reds, yellows, blues, greens. Pick up the Mexian/Indian theme through my house. I had not thought of any stenciling though.... hmmm gonna have to look into that.

Be sure to post pics!

Oil base for inside, huh? Thanks, Ginger, I would not have known that. I am still trying to decide what to do.......

Is this your project of the ladderbacks and table????
Sounds like a fun plan. If the table and chairs have turned legs etc you can use the shapes and highlight with color.
If you have a recycling center near you, you should be able to pick up free paint for all of your projects. Their is one near me and I just love it. You can drop off your unused stuff and shop (all for free) for paint varnish etc for all your projects. I have not had to but paint or varnish since I discovered the place. It is great!!!!!!!! :D
Show us some pics of your project. It sounds fun!!!!!!

maidofshade- yep, this is the project I am thining about to keep me productive over the winter. I just really don't know much about furniture painting and I don't want to ruin the chairs (especially) or the table!

Don't worry  It's all fun--you wouldn't believe how some of the saddest looking thinks come alive with a little imagination and paint!! I was thinking about your project and remembered doing a funky shaped table I got at an auction with some white cabinet paint (from the recycling place but also sold at home depot menards etc) You wouldn't believe the transformation. Remember it's only paint and if you really hate it then it's easy to change the color. Have fun with it!!!!!!!!
