Lily Sprouts...oh my!

Post by nanny_56 »

I brought several pots of lily bulbs from old house and have them stored in the garage, which is not heated.

Several, mostly the asiatics, are sprouting!

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Should I leave them alone or.....?

I'm sorry no one gave you any suggestions.

I only have 1 Asiatic and this is my first winter with it so I have no practical experience or advice.

Good luck!

Bad Old Coot

Post by oldcoot »

:-? :-? :-? Keep it watered and give it as much sun as it can get. OC has a lot of Lilies of all kinds on his back deck, but none are showing ANY signs of coming up. If it is sprouting, it will need water, not too much, but enough to keep the sprouts green. As soon as the weather stops freezing, put the pots out in full sun and keep them watered a little. Should do great.

Hi Claudia,

Lilies need to be stored just a little below freezing to keep them from sprouting (about 30 degrees) and the asiatics can take it even colder without trouble. When I have lilies left in pots I try to get the Orientals in the ground but the asiatics I just tip on their side since they are so cold tolerant.

But if the soil temp gets even a little above freezing the asiatics really do start sprouting soon. If you can move them to a little colder spot of the garage it might slow them down until spring. If you decide to water do it lightly and make sure the soil dries out between waterings so as not to encourage rot in cold, wet soil.

They might not bloom all that great this year but in time they will be just fine.

Good luck!

Chris

All lilies are now safe & snug in the ground, thanks to the warm weather the last few days!!
