What's pruning my lilies?

Post by Patrushka »

I have found two lilies with the stems cut off and left lying on the ground. One was nipped almost to the ground and the other is about 5 inches tall. The strange thing is that the ends are cut at an angle as if they were cut with shears. I suspect it is a rabbit. Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes! I have. Darn critters. Even some of the babies I have from special crosses I've done. Seems as though we have a large population of them this season. They always "cut" at an angle like that. And it just irritates me even more that they just leave them laying - at least they could eat the evidence. Then I'd feel like they needed it for food and it might not seem so bad. They are even a problem with the hasta this yr, which hasn't happened before. Maybe since we live in the city not enough natural predators - the cats can't keep up!
