Thy once a month I pull out all the boxes of everything I have stored and open each bag and every thing is dumped in a box and checked then restored until the next month. The only thing I don't check thoroughly is my geraniums,I have so many that I don't miss the 3 or 4 that don't make it.I am starting to pass a lot of my bulbs/plants Ect. on to garden friends as I'm getting too old to work in the garden plus my Son was just diagnosed with lung cancer so that is keeping occupied.

Your calla lilies are beautiful!!! And since you know so much about them, maybe you can give me some help on this...

Several years ago a friend gave me a potted calla lily from a florist. It was only in a 4" pot and the bulbs were planted very shallowly... the leaves were less than a foot tall and the flowers were smaller and burgundy. I grew it through the summer, then I let it go dormant for the winter but kept it potted as it was and grew it again the next summer with the same result: leaves less than a foot tall and the flowers were again burgundy.

Again I kept it dormant through winter '11-'12... but I read that callas like to be planted much deeper (4" - 6" I think) so I repotted the bulbs deeper into a large pot and grew it through the summer of '12. It never did bloom last year but the leaves were enormous compared to the previous years... at least 2 - 3 feet long and larger! So again it was dormant in its pot through this past winter. For some dumb reason I decided to give it just a *bit* of water in February and it started to grow immediately, so I moved it to a south-facing window. Within about a month I had those large leaves again -- and at least a dozen flowers -- but they're the wrong color! The flowers are now white/pink! It is still blooming profusely indoors. Here's a pic:
Image

So, I'm wondering if it was wrong to plant them deeper... I've since read that only certain types of callas like to be planted that deep, and I have no idea what mine are. I'm also wondering why the flowers are a different color than the original burgundy!

Thanks for any help! I'm not much on tropical plants, but my friend LOVES them and she's always buying me stuff like this.

First off let me congratulate you on getting them to bloom so well indoors and so many blooms.I think your problem was Too little light that will result in fading of lilies' flowers from burgany to pink.If you get them back on a summer blooming schedule I'm sure they will bloom burgany again.

Thanks, Bill. If that's true, then I'll deliberately grow them indoors with less light because this color flower is much prettier than the burgundy! lol!
