O.C.'s 05 Shade Bed Pictures

Post by oldcoot »

What better place to start than 25 years ago, where it all started. This is his mother's FERN bed. She had some HUGE Ferns that she dearly loved. (But then she always "DEARLY" loved all her flowers.) O.C. moved some of these ferns to Rock Hill when she passed away, but he didn't know then how to really take care of them. Had them in too much sun......Knows better now, and is starting a new Fern bed in his new shade bed.....with Chris's help.....

Please enjoy...................

beautiful setting! where is Rock Hill? I lived in Greeneville for a few years as a pre-kindergartner. Not many memories of the flora but it would seem NW SC is a gardeners paradise. Maybe the closest thing to Pacific Northwest we have "down south"

It is nice.........

Post by oldcoot »

Rock Hill is right off I-77 coming from Columbia. S.C. It is about 30 or so miles south of Charlotte, N.C. which is moving this way fast. Did you live in Greenville S.C. or Greenville NC . O.C. used to live in Greenville S.. once upon a time. Got transfered to Charlotte, didn't want to live there so settled in Rock Hill. Greenvile S.C. is South West of us down I-85. By cutting cross country (and we know ALL these backroads ) we can be here in about an hour- hour and a half, depending on traffic.

This is beatiful country. At one time was mostly farm and timber land. Now, housing complexes are going up everywhere and EXPENSIVE homes. Folks from Charlotte live here and commute. Good Interstate to get there.

Thanks for asking...

A qustions on ferns

Post by oldcoot »

These are pictures of the ferns OC was given last fall by Josh's mother, and he has been nurturing (really baby sitting is more like it) all winter. They have been keep alive in Joy's Jacuzzi, except when it is raining and warm enought to put them outside. They are rapidly putting out new growth, so O.C. believes if he can keep them alive another 3 weeks, he can put them outside in his shade beds.

Question, can you tell kind kind of Fern this is....Wonder if it is hardy to zoned 7b ?? O.C. sufre doesn't want to b aby sitg them again NEXT winter....

Thanks,

After O.C.'s Hellborus Bloomed

Post by oldcoot »

and considering they had been moved twice last year, they have made a real home in O.C.'s shade Bed. They must have really liked that Sand, Cow Manure, Compost, and Top Soil, Josh and O.C. put in that bed last year, because they have almost DOUBLED in size since they bloomed. Bet they will REALLY b epretty NEXT year. They WILL NOT be moved again..

O.C.'s Chameleon Plants

Post by oldcoot »

O.C. believes that the real name is Hottunya. The leaves start out green and white but then add some rust or wine later on. He started then in a tray on his deck several years ago, then moved them out into what is NOW his new Hosta bed. They barely survied the summer's heat and dry spell. Last fall he moved them over into the new shade bed in GOOD DIrt. They rewarded him THIS year with really putting on good new growth. With ADDITIONAL good dirt, he believe hey just might regain some statue..

Sure are pretty when they change color....

This must be a good bed

Post by oldcoot »

This was a new bed last year and reworked when Danny
cleaned all the weeds out. A good layer of O.C.'s new "dirt" was placed carfully around each plant and the bed lightly mulched with Pine Needles and small chipped up bark.. Every thing really jumped out with several nice rain, but is . starting to get dry again, so O.C. guesses that the "Infamous-Hose" will have to come out in the moring. Be a good time to hit them with a little Epson Salts and MG-LIGHT. NEW Hootchis are now putting out....
TAKE A LOOK. All new foliage.

Post by oldcoot »

two of the five Ferns I kept in my bathtub over the winter DID make it and are beginning to grow nicely. This is an Old Fern that comes back nicely every year..It was so shady back in there, O.C. had to use fill flash...

O.C. is really enjoying "shade beding" this year and hopes to ass new things when it finally cools back down in August. Temp went to 94* this afternoon with humidity so high we had a heat index at one time of 113* Hey, this is SC not Arizonna !!!!

A most unusual Shade Bed

Post by oldcoot »

Has an elephant ear growing right in the middle of it.

Originally planted in a pot several years back, but replanted last spring when these beds were finished. Did nothing last year and O.C. had even forgotten about it. But low and behold, here it is...Along with a new little Helleborus spinning off from it mommie, and new Ferns planted this spring...In the afternoon the whole back yard gets shady about 4:00PM and this is really one cool place andx usually damp;...

Please enjoy.
