Strange creatures from the shade garden...

Post by doublemom2 »

I just love the way arisaema costatum holds it's leaves, keeps it interesting even after the flower has faded. And this is just a baby eek!

Ligularia japonica is a monster... The flowers are really slow to open, but the color is nice and bright outside my kitchen window.

Ligularia przewalski is another beast, but I love it. The flower spikes reach about 7 feet tall every year, great for a shady corner in amongst hostas.

I'm not sure what zone the ligularias are hardy to. And also keep an eye out for "farfugium", as some of them have been renamed by the botanical powers that be. I have four, and only one has not grown well.

They are water hogs, absolutely hate to get dried out and get droopy on hot days, but perk right back up with a good watering and as it cools in the evening.
