Variegated hakone grass

Post by Tigger »

Is there anyone who doesn't have this fabulous plant in their garden? Yeah, it's absurdly expensive for a "companion plant," but give it time. The arching effect is incredible.

This clump may stay as big as it is, but I think we're going to send most of the one behind it to mom. And I already have a spot to move the Emily Dickinson that this one is swallowing up.

For reference, that's acer palmatum 'Red Select' behind, and astilbe 'Apple Blossom' to the left.

Forgot to mention: we also have the all-green version (species), an all-gold one, and the one that is more white-striped. I'll have to get a good pic (the one I have is way washed out, as the St. Elmo's Fire behind them is burning the image too much).

Edit: don't have the all-green one after all. But the gold one is great.

Wow, what a great clump. I love this grass and have a small clump that is just starting to get a little larger.

Tigger, do the other grasses have the same arching habit or are they more upright?

I expect they'll be the same, but our clumps are (for now) smaller and not positioned in a way where they'll flow so naturally.

Eve Thyrum, on the convention tour, has tons of this planted around her big pond. Just spectacular.
