Dividing epimedium

Post by impatience »

Anyone have advice for dividing epimedium? (I am quite shook up that Chris doesn't have any for mail order in the nursery, so I have no choice but to divide-for now.)

Should the whole thing be dug and divided? Or what? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Aren't they great?! I've divided some by just inserting a trowel into the clump at a likely spot and lifting away a division-- not disturbing the rest. They are pretty obliging.

Ditto what John said... they're a lot like hostas in dividing. You can lift the entire clump and pry apart some of the rhizomes, or you can just find a likely spot along the edge of the clump, stick a shovel or sharp knife down, and get pieces off the side without lifting the entire clump. When you plant the sections, lie the rhizomes flat (horizontal), not sitcking straight up and down.

They are very forgiving plants, and should take care of themselves. Divide any time now if they're starting to go dormant. Enjoy!
