Good background?

Post by Tkzone7 »

Hi, I was just wondering what would be some good shurbs for behind hostas?
My yard is rather bright, but no real direct light in several spaces. Right next to the house though in a small section I do need something that can take evening sun. I want to plant a crape myrtle tree in the corner of that bed, so what ever shrub it may be will eventually have some dappled shade above. I already have a Hydrangea Endless Summer, would that work?

Sorry to sound so clueless, I thought years ago that hosta would be all I need. I have since found out that I need some good bones, for winter intrest.

I love Hydrangea with Hosta! But, if you are after winter interest, that's not too much help. Are you thinking about Rhododendron or Kalmia (Mountain Laurel) maybe? Those require acid soil, would that work in your area? Maybe even Camellia or some type of Holly.

My only worry about acid soil is the hostas. They are my main focus so I need some things that will like the same soil.

I check up on the Camellia! Thanks!
