Heat and crossing hosta

Post by scootersbear »

I'm curious how this heat has affected the people who hybridize hostas? I have a total of 3 seed pods on Climax that have taken and that is it and those were crossed in July when we were actually getting rain. Nothing is taking and it has to be the heat ...105 degrees is just rediculous in Colorado....I'm gonna have to dig up hostas and take them inside just to get a few to take :o

I dug up my Neat Splash today for exactly that purpose!

:( Galaxy is aborting her pods right & left! I knew I should have dug her in the spring, if I dig her now she'll surely loose them all.
My main breeeders are in pots and in the house right now. :P Heat index for today is to reach 115, we've had 20-some days straight with temps of 90 or higher :o and all I seem to get done is watering.

I gave up for this year.

And even leaving the plants for the bees to pollenate, I'm not getting many pods to set.

I did bring a few inside to work with, that didn't work either.

Oh well, guess we're all in the same boat this summer!

I'm not having much success, but since most of what I breed with is late blooming there is still hope.
