2 month seedlings

It's amazing how much difference a week makes at this stage. Those planted on 1/21-22 are so much farther along than those planted 1/28-29.

In the center of the first picture is a 'Swoosh' x H. yingeri cross. The second picture is the 'Neat Splash' OP seedling x 'Quill' cross with an interesting new leaf. The third is a cross of 'Designer Genes' with yellow seedling from 2004 which is a cross of two of my earlier yellow seedlings. I wonder if they will stay that shiny.

The seedlings look great.
The shiney yellow ones should be fun to watch.

George those seedlings are great :D ! I hope you'll keep posting their progress, its fascinating for someone liike myself who has never grown hosta and doesn't know what to expect.

Quick question. Did you start the seeds in the flats they're in, or did you transplant to what's in the picture (I hope this is not a stupid question)? If you started them there, how did you keep them from drying out?

Thanks for sharing! Donna

Seedlings

Donna, these have been transplanted into the six paks. I start the seeds in two different four-pak sizes or in 1 x 8 paks, depending on how many seeds of that cross or OP pods there are. The 152 OP seeds of 'Azure Snow' took two 1 x 8 paks. Sometimes there's only one seed. I cull ruthlessly at transplant time. (As ruthless as I can be, anyway, with my own seedlings.)

I put 3" high domes on the trays, so they don't need water often. I wash off all the old soil from the roots while transplanting, and bottom water the six paks with diluted 20-20-20.

I was afraid these were still too small to be interesting, but I'll post another batch of seedling pictures this evening, since you were nice enough to express interest.

I'll look forward to that next batch of pics, too, George! Awesome!! I took my babies outside to play for an hour yesterday morning and again last evening for an hour. I think they grew by about 20%!!!! :D :D I could hardly believe my eyes, in fact I checked them again this morning...thought I must have just been tired or something! :D

Thanks for asking, Donna. I will try to take some new pics. I don't have a very good camera, so they won't look like these others. I let the babies out to play awhile longer today, and since yesterday morning they have nearly doubled in size!!!! I could hardly believe it!!! Fresh air is a wonderful thing! :D
