A 'Hacksaw' seedling

One of last year's OP 'Hacksaw' seedlings. Love that combination of yellow leaves and red petioles. Looks as if it'll stay small, but fairly vigorous: it came up with 3 shoots this spring. Now baby it along for a couple of years...



I start my seedlings outdoors in late March, out of necessity. I haven't got the space indoors. I generally do my first culling in July, this one made the cut obviously and with any luck at all I'll see it flower this year.

Well, here we are a couple of years later. Picture was taken earlier today. The plant was divided in the spring, with one division going into the ground, and then this one back into a pot. The one in the ground is much smaller, I suspect the slugs have been feasting on it for one, plus it would have had a bit of a struggle growing new roots during our extremely dry summer. The one in the pot shows several scapes but there are no flowers or pods left on it, a resident rodent -probably a squirrel- has a penchant for hosta scapes. Haven't gotten around to trapping the little bugger and relocate it....

Thanks, Chris. I hope to get a better idea next year as to how wavy the leaf actually is. As you can see it is viridescent. Hopefully the scape on the small division in the ground will escape the rodent's attention, certainly all the others planted there have been ignored but it's more than likely it just hasn't been discovered yet.

While I still have this seedling, it's a mere shadow of its former self, I'm trying to nurse it back to size. It's so small I haven't even bothered with another picture of it.

Having said all that, there's another yellow 'Hacksaw' seedling from that year which I call 'Yella Fella'...it was divided last year and I'm looking forward to seeing it flower this year. It doesn't have the same leaf substance of 'Tousled Hair', more like its parent. It has reddish petioles and when the leaves first unfurl there are reddish tips, it is an OP seedling...

Crossing my fingers for the other. A bit disappointing when they look wonderful to start and then don't match expectations.

Thanks, Ann, but as of a couple of days ago 'Yellowknife' is no more.... Sooner or later another yellow seedling will come along deserving of the moniker.
