Seedlings I'm keeping or watching

Post by ViolaAnn »

I have quite a number of Open-Pollinated (OP) seedlings that I'm quite happy with. Some I've already given a name. Others I'm watching and may keep. I will post them in small batches and I invite discussion and or suggestions on whether I should name them, name suggestions, and even if you really seriously think any are worth registering.

Finally, I often name after my grandkids to are Amy, Nolan, Leila and Heidi. My husband has made ice research his life work and I'm a musician. All of those could give naming ideas.

Here are the pictures. The five in this post already have names.

1. 'Amy's Choice'. A 2007 seedling from 'Korean Snow'. When it was named, it had a hint of mistiness in the leaves, but that's long gone.

2. 'Dancing With Leila', a 2008 seedling from 'Last Dance'. This one beat the odds and is a reverse colour from its variegated pod parent. It looks a great deal like the commercially available 'Dance With Me', hence its name after my second granddaughter.

3. 'Golden Nolan' a 2006 seedling from 'September Sun' This one was almost neon yellow earlier in the spring and really stood out in the garden. Named after my grandson.

4. 'Heidi Ho', a 2012 seedling from 'Spilt Milk. Named after my third granddaughter. It's going to be a large plant. Took half of it to Vancouver in late June and have a small eye I'm nurturing for Heidi's other grandparents.

5. 'Lovely Leila, is named after the second granddaughter. This is a 2006 seedling, parentage unknown as squirrels moved around my markers during its first winter. It emerges with almost white leaf centres which go misty and/or darken up. How much they darken depends on the year.

6. 2009 seedling from 'Touch of Class'. This is a small plant which is quite bright yellow in early spring and tones down. Has slightly red petioles.
Seedling-09-TOC2-180710-1s.jpg
7. 2010 seedling from 'Deja Blu'. I like this blue seedling a lot, but have not yet divided it. Will do that soon and might give it a name. Any suggestions related to Amy, Nolan or Heidi?

8. '2012 seedling from 'Christmas Pageant'. Watching this one this year because it's a shadow of what it was last year. I had several large hostas that suffered this past winter and this is one. It WAS much taller and I'm hoping for the best for next year. Will post last year's picture for comparison.

The same seedling last year.

9. 2012 seedling from 'Korean Snow'. This is a fast-growing seedling from KS. But I'm not quite sure it warrants keeping long term or giving a name. Suggestions welcome though.
Seedling-12-Korean_Snow-180710s.jpg
10. 2012 seedling from 'Lemon Frost'. A very tiny (the size of my hand) hosta. Moved it this year to a spot where it can be seen and will watch it.
Seedling-12-Lemon_Frost-180710s.jpg
11. 2012 seedling from 'Salute'. Love this one. Nicely shaped, glossy leaves. I think this one deserves a name.
Seedling-12-Salute-180710s.jpg
12. 2013 seedling from 'Fire Island'. Still watching this one to see if it forms a nice mound eventually. The petioles are slightly red and the entire plant is an unusual colour of green.

13. 2013 seedling from 'Neat Splash'. I was given seeds from NS and these all came from one plant that resulted from those seeds. I divided the plant a couple of years ago because it had so many things going on with it - really unstable. While all of this originated as one plant, the eyes vary widely as to streakiness and margination. Still watching to see if this settles into anything worth keeping.
Seedling-13-Neat_Splash-180710s.jpg
14. 2013 seedling from 'Touch of Class'. This one has red petioles and the leaves are not overly large as you can see in the next picture. Amy (granddaughter #1) liked it last year' so I may be looking for a name related to her name. Suggestions welcome (she's very artistic).

15. 2014 seedling from 'Emerald Ruff Cut'. Love the ruffled leaves on this one and thinking it might be worthy of a name. Suggestions welcome.

16. 2016 seedling from 'Emerald Ruff Cut'. Another one with ruffled leaves, but this one is green.

17. 2016 seedling from 'Curly Fries'. I like this one which may end up looking a lot like mama.
Seedling-16-Curly_Fries1-180710s.jpg
18. 2016 seedling from 'Curly Fries'. Amazing how different this one is from the previous picture. I think next year will decide whether I keep it or not.
Seedling-16-Curly_Fries2-180710s.jpg
19. 2016 seedling from 'Dorset Clown'. Watching this one but thinking it may not grow well enough to keep.
Seedling-16-Dorset_Clown-180710s.jpg
20. 2016 seedling from 'Purple Heart'. I think this one may be a winner with the wide, red, petioles and shiny green leaves.

21. 2016 seedling from 'Salute'. This one also shows a bit of red in the petioles. I'll try to get another picture w/o shadows.
Seedling-16-Salute-180710s.jpg
22. 2016 seedling from 'Spilt MIlk' has been consistently misty and I think it will be a keeper.
Seedling-16-Spilt_Milk-180710s.jpg
23. 2016 seedling from 'Tickle Me Pink'. Amazing how different these three seedlings are, but I'm still watching all of them.
Seedling-16-Tickle_Me_Pink1-180710s.jpg
24. 2016 seedling from 'Tickle Me Pink'. This one has leaves like leather and some of them have little sawtooth edges.
Seedling-16-Tickle_Me_Pink2-180710s.jpg
25. 2016 seedling from 'Tickle Me Pink'. A nice yellow.

26. 2018 seedling from 'Deja Blu'. Given the nice seedling I have from 2010 from DB, I'm watching this one.
Seedling-18-Deja_Blu1-180710s.jpg
27. 2018 seedling from 'Ice Age Trail'. Watching this one for sure. It's got tough leaves and enough green that it should grow well.
Seedling-18-Ice_Age_Trail-180710s.jpg
28. 2018 seedling from 'Pixie Vamp'. PV is a mini; so this one may not be very large. I like the hint of ruffles on the leaves.
Seedling-18-Pixie_Vamp-180710s.jpg
29. 2018 seedling from 'Spilt Milk'. Watching this one because a few leaves are showing a hint of a margin. It's possible it might end up looking like 'Heidi Ho' (#4 above).

30. 2018 seedling #1 from 'Purple Heart'. Watching these three because I like the 2016 seedling so much.

31. 2018 seedling #2 from 'Purple Heart'. Watching these three because I like the 2016 seedling so much.

32. 2018 seedling #3 from 'Purple Heart'. Watching these three because I like the 2016 seedling so much.

33. 2012 Weedling. Found this one almost under my 'Lakeside Zinger' and would be willing to bet that's the parent. The leaves are small - that's 'Grand Prize' to the right - and they are tough as nails. Rather like this little one.
Weedling-180710s.jpg
Finally, my little seedling bed where many of these reside until I decide what to do with them.
Seedling-bed-180710s.jpg
Your turn now. I'd really like to know what you think about any or all of these seedlings.
